How to Optimize Google Business Profile for More Leads

Step 1: Complete Every Field (90%+ Completion)

Google rewards complete profiles. A profile that's 90%+ complete ranks higher than incomplete ones. This is non-negotiable.

Start by auditing your current GBP. Log in to your profile and check which fields are missing or incomplete.

Every field matters, but some have higher impact: description, photos, service areas, hours, phone number, and categories. You need to fill in your business name (must match NAP elsewhere), full address and service areas, phone number (call-able, monitored), website URL (must be HTTPS), business description (160 characters, keywords natural), categories (pick 2-3 most relevant), opening hours (and holiday hours), photos (minimum 10, ideally 20+), and business video (if available).

Step 2: Write a Keyword-Rich Description

Your GBP description appears in search results and the profile. Make it count. You have 160 characters to convince someone to click.

Include your main service keyword and location modifier naturally. Don't keyword-stuff; write like a human.

Bad example: 'HVAC repair, AC repair, heating repair, furnace repair, heat pump repair in Phoenix'. Good example: 'Emergency HVAC repair and air conditioning service for Phoenix homes and businesses.'

Your description should include 1-2 primary keywords naturally, mention your main service area (city/region), add a unique differentiator (24/7, family-owned, licensed, etc.), be written for humans, not just keywords, and kept under 160 characters.

Step 3: Add High-Quality Photos (20+ Images)

Photos are powerful local ranking signals. Google shows profiles with multiple, recent, high-quality photos higher in results.

Upload a mix: profile photo, cover photo, team photos, before/after (if applicable), service in action, office/workspace.

Use recent, professional photos. Phone-quality images are fine, but lighting and composition matter. Your photos should include a profile photo (clear, professional logo or headshot), cover photo (branded image or team), service photos (work in progress, completed projects), team photos (staff, office environment), before/afters (major impact for visual services), and monthly updates for recency signal.

Step 4: Generate and Respond to Reviews

Review count and rating directly impact local rankings. Google Business Profile reviews are the strongest local signal after GBP completeness.

Your goal: 10+ reviews, 4.5+ rating. This typically takes 2-3 months of consistent effort.

Don't just collect reviews. Respond to every review (positive and negative). Response rate itself is a ranking signal. Ask customers for reviews after job completion. Use Google's 'ask for review' feature in GBP. Create a QR code for easy review submission. Respond within 24 hours if possible. Thank positive reviewers, address concerns in negative reviews. Keep responses professional and brief.

Step 5: Post Updates 2x Per Month

GBP posts are short updates that appear on your profile and in search results. They signal activity and freshness to Google.

Post at least twice per month. Mix content types: promotions, new services, team updates, customer spotlights, helpful tips. Post about seasonal offers or promotions. Announce new services or team members. Share customer testimonials or success stories. Post helpful tips related to your service. Share events or special announcements. Use local keywords naturally in posts.

Beyond GBP: Website and Content Matter

GBP optimization gets you visible, but your website and content keep visitors engaged. Here's where you convert.

Your website should have a dedicated service page for each main service and location combo. This page links to your GBP and vice versa. Create location and service-specific landing pages. Add schema markup (LocalBusiness, Service, etc.). Make sure your website is mobile-friendly. Add NAP to website footer or contact page. Link from website to GBP.
